Room 3 kids love maths especially when they get given a challenge!
The challenge was to select 5 different shapes. Then together we gave each shape an amount that it was worth! All the shapes and their amounts were displayed on the board and the children then had to work out the total value of all their shapes!
This involved a lot of thinking and strategies for adding multiple numbers. Perseverance was key
Making the most of the sunshine
We made the most of a sunny Thursday afternoon this week and went outside for some relay races! With the Olympics fast approaching we will be getting involved in many challenges, activities and games related to the olympics!
We got quite competitive and had to practice our ball and running skills while we worked as a team to be as fast as we could!

Pyjama day and Fleurs Birthday
What a busy and exciting day!!
Can’t believe we are already half way through the year!!
Today is pyjama day, end of term AND Fleurs birthday!! Fleur is our 3rd six year old in room 3!!
Fleurs lovely mum came in with a surprise thismorning! She brought CAKE! what a treat!!
We are having a fantastic last day of term
Getting hands on during maths
We learn much better and can relate so much more to the content when the activity is hands on. This week with our measurement focus we made our own measuring scales and used different equipment to make our scales balance!
We also worked with a partner using play dough and had to work together to make our amount of play dough the same size so our scales would be balanced.
We are learning to use measurement language like heavier, lighter, the same, weight etc
Our little mystery….
On Monday morning room 3 thought they were just going for a wander to the field to look at the autumn leaves that had fallen but when they returned there were white footprints EVERYWHERE!! the footprints were leading into the reading corner!
Straight away we became detectives- we had so many questions about the footprints! Our stories we wrote on Monday are very exciting and packed full of detail.
After lunch there were MORE footprints even going over the tables and stopping at the brain food with crumbs everywhere and a little note was left behind along with a library book…
After much discussion and questioning different people around the school we used our measuring skills and went and measured feet of our suspects!
Lucy and Elliot headed to the library to measure Mrs Campbell’s feet and it was HER!!!!!!
what a day full of excitement it was!
Experts on space!!
Room three are space experts! We know so much information about the solar system!
We had an awesome trip to the planetarium where we learnt and saw lots including watching how the night sky changes.
We have been doing matariki art and writing imaginative stories about going into space.
This is our Matariki art which resembles each of our hands reaching for the stars
We have also started learning how to the Maori game- rakau’s
Phases of the moon the room 3 way
Since we are inquiring into Matariki we have been making links between matariki and the solar system
And space in general.
This week we looked at the 8 phases of the moon and found out some interesting facts. To help us better understand the phases of the moon and what each phase looks like, we worked with a buddy to carve cookie cream into the shape of each phase of the moon and then we got to EAT the cookies!!! Yum!
We were so good at working together and taking turns. I just love the way room 3 work so well together
