Room 3 2017

Room 3 News

Hello and welcome to room 3. This newsletter has just a few things to keep you up to date with what is happening in the super room 3.

So far we have been very busy and I am impressed at how well all the room three children have settled into life in room 3. What a bunch of hard workers we have with a range of great skills.

Swimming, Fitness and P.E.

Our swimming days are over now as the pool is ready for a big clean. We were lucky to have many great swimming sessions.  Now that swimming is over we will be working on catching and throwing as well as doing the school PMP programme.

Stationery:

Thank you for sending the stationery so promptly. This has been helpful for us to get our work underway smoothly.

Library:

We go to the school library on Wednesday afternoons and the children can issue two books and may borrow them for up to 2 weeks. The books can be returned and swapped each week if desired, or kept for 2 weeks.

Assemblies:

We have school assembly every 2nd Monday Afternoon from 1.30-2pm

Our junior assembly is on a Friday morning each week.

Inquiry:

This term our inquiry focus is based around our school values. We will be unpacking the school values and looking at what they mean to us and how we show them.  Come and visit us during the term and you will see what we have been up to. I will also keep you updated on seesaw.

Homework:

There will be a weekly homework update in your child’s Homework book. The focus of homework will be literacy- reading, spelling; and numeracy practice. Homework books must be brought to school each Friday morning for marking and discussion and for sharing of any special work.

Literacy:

Reading

Books will be taken home each day. The “guided reading” book is at your child’s reading level and will have been read by your child in class with teaching guidance from me. Please fill in your child’s reading log and return it to school each day.

Spelling:

In year 1, 3 words are taken from the essential spelling lists for your child to practise for the week. Spelling words are tested every Friday and new words are then given. Word building, spelling and phonics are taught and reinforced at literacy time in class.

Writing:

This term we will be writing recount stories, concentrating on developing a plan for our writing and talking about the setting and adding in detail where we can to make our stories interesting and exciting for the readers.

News:

Each child has a talk buddy in which they share news with and chat with every morning. Children then get to share something them and their buddy talked about to the whole class. Buddies will be changed around every now and then.

Numeracy:

We are focusing on number knowledge and strategy. We do this five days a week through small teaching groups, games, practical activities and work tasks. Maths homework will be related to what we have been doing in class.

It has been a super start to 2017 in room 3. We have our self-portraits up on display and we are already producing some fantastic work!

Kind Regards,

Hannah Brodie. Class Teacher   Room 3  Arthur Miller School

Making rulers

Today was fun maths and we made our own rulers!!
We had giant straws and needed to make a ruler that went up in 10’s meaning in between each ten there needed to be exactly a 10cm gap! We had to be so thorough with our measuring and sticking to be sure our ruler was accurate!
Our rulers turned out to be 80cm long! After we had made our rulers we had some fun with measuring

Term 3 news

Room 3 News

Term 3 already! Just a quick note with what’s on the go this term! Another busy one ahead and a bit shorter being only 9 weeks.

Thanks to all those parents who came for parent/teacher interviews in the last week of term 2. I really enjoyed sharing your children’s’ growth with you and discussing next steps and ways to help at home.

This Thursday 4th August we have a disco! Junior school are at 5:30-6:30 and it is an Olympic theme so come dressed like an Olympian and have a wicked time- I’ll be there 🙂

Assemblies:

We have school assembly every 2nd Monday afternoon straight after lunch. This change was made to keep our morning literacy block uninterrupted.

Inquiry:

This term our inquiry focus is based around our school production which is called “Cinderella and Rockerfella” The show will involve the whole school and will be performed on the last Thursday of the term. We have begun learning our songs and dances which will be a huge focus throughout the term. We will also do some learning around the 2016 Rio Olympics so that will keep us busy for sure.

News:

News days are staying the same until the end of the year. We have news Monday to Thursday and the children have their days on the front of their homework book and it is also displayed in the classroom. Please remind your child not to bring anything too special to school.

Endurance-a-thon

3 days a week at the end of the day we will be heading outside with the other junior classes running/walking/jogging and crawling around the field to practice for the endurance-a-thon.
